He earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to the bar in South Carolina and North Carolina in 1982, and later in Georgia in 1991.

Rick throughout his life was involved in and supported charitable and political organizations and was a founding member of the FTS Foundation.

Anyone who knew Rick is always quick to point out his very dry sense of humor, and an incredible intelligence! He loved to debate, his wealth of knowledge always giving him an upper hand. He also loved history, especially the history of the United Kingdom and it’s Royal Families. Those who knew him well, were aware of his fight for the underdog, and how passionate he could be in the support of those he believed in and cared about. He had the gift of gab and loved meaningful conversation. Those who knew him and loved him, can only hope the good Lord as provided him a podium and a willing audience to advise and mentor, and entertain!
