Former Central Oregon resident Larry Pratt, 76, passed away December 30. Mr. Pratt was founding Director of the Sunriver Nature Center Astronomical Observatory, believed in the importance of dark skies, and was instrumental in the writing and passage of the original 1994 Deschutes County Lighting Ordinance. He was later Assistant Director of Interpretive Services for the Deschutes National Forest and managed Newberry National Volcanic Monument's Lava Lands Visitor Center. He was Recreation Project Manager for the Coronado National Forest in Tucson, AZ from 2006 until his retirement in 2016. He enjoyed astronomy, geology, birding, photography, and exploring the natural world. He traveled extensively in the western states with his wife, Kathy, who survives him in Tucson, AZ.
