Obituary for Don Martin
Don Martin, a cherished husband, father, and beloved swim coach, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, in Olympia, Washington, at the age of 86. Born on May 23, 1939, in Gwen, Michigan, Don lived a life filled with dedication, inspiration, and passion for education and sports.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan Martin, two stepdaughters, Carolyn Sears and Christina Watkins and their three sons, Rob, Dan, and Christopher Martin. Don also leaves behind seven adoring grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy of kindness and determination. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helen Martin.
A graduate of Olympia High School in 1957, Don continued his education at the University of Washington, graduating in 1963, and further pursued his studies at the University of Puget Sound, St. Martin's College, Central Washington University, and Pacific Lutheran University. His commitment to learning and teaching shaped his career as a history teacher at Olympia High School, where he inspired countless students from 1963 to 1982. Alongside his teaching career, Don was an accomplished swim coach and a revered varsity coach, dedicating himself to nurturing young athletes.
Don's enthusiasm for swimming was matched only by his passion for empowering others. Those fortunate enough to be guided by his hand on the pool deck will remember his resounding cheers and unwavering belief in their potential. His motto, “If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me,” became a guiding principle that he instilled in his students and swimmers alike. His positive outlook and kind-hearted nature endeared him to many, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Outside of his professional life, Don was an engaging political activist with a voracious appetite for learning. Frequently found with a book in his hands, he often recommended titles that expanded the minds of those around him, emphasizing the importance of hard work and perseverance in achieving greatness. He lived by the belief that true potential is reached through effort and dedication, lessons he imparted with every interaction.
Don Martin will be remembered not just as a teacher or a coach, but as a true legend who left an indelible mark on his community. He had a way of making each person feel valued and empowered, a gift that will resonate for years to come.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 1 PM at Huber's Gasthaus, located at 2312 Friendly Grove Rd NE, Olympia, WA 98506. The family invites all who knew and loved Don to join them in celebrating his remarkable life and the legacy he leaves behind.
In his memory, let us carry forward his lessons of kindness, resilience, and the unwavering belief that each of us has the potential to achieve greatness.
