Simplicio Baysa Catiggay was born in Cabulalaan, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on March 13, 1926, and died on December 10, 2025.
After enduring WWII in the Philippines, and serving as a Sakada, Contract Laborer in Hawaii, he joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and proudly served his adopted country for 24 years, followed by over 20 years in Federal Civil Service. During his active military service, he served two tours in the Korean War where he was wounded and served three tours in Vietnam. During his military days, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Simplicio “Sam” retired from the U.S. Army as a First Sergeant (E-8 1SG). He settled his family in Marina CA and was an active member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Marina, holding many leadership roles including being the Head Deacon.
Simplicio enjoyed long walks with the family dogs, and watching a variety of sports, getting into the spirit of the ups and downs of competition. Simplicio was preceded in death by his devoted wife Angeles Bumagat Catiggay (1996), and by his parents Santiago & Bonifacia, and siblings Vicenta, Modesta, and Macario, as well as more siblings whose names are to be confirmed.
Simplicio is survived by his sons James Catiggay and Oscar Catiggay; daughters-in-law Patricia (Olvez) Catiggay and Donna (Archer) Catiggay; and his grandchildren Oscar Simplicio Catiggay, Annalicia Nicole Catiggay, Alex Jayson Olvez Catiggay, and Justin Thomas Catiggay. His impact and influence will be dearly missed.
Viewing and Visitation will be held at the Mission Memorial Park Chapel in Seaside, 1915 Ord Grove Avenue Seaside, CA 93955 on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 4pm to 7pm, with the Final Viewing and Funeral at 10am on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Marina, 234 Carmel Avenue in Marina, followed by Burial at 1pm at Mission Memorial Park Cemetery in Seaside, 1915 Ord Grove Avenue Seaside, CA 93955.
