Elizabeth “Betty” Thompson passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love, the day after celebrating her 99th birthday. Her life was a beautiful reflection of devotion to family, enduring friendships, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys that filled her days.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James “Jimmy” Thompson, her partner in life for nearly 55 years, and by her cherished son, Arthur Stephen Thompson. She is survived by her loving children: daughter Lynn, son Michael, and daughter Megan and her husband Erik. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Stephanie and her husband Steve, and Cooper; her great-grandchildren, Landon and Liam; and her dear daughter-in-law, Linda. Her family was her greatest pride, and she followed their lives with love, interest, and a wonderful sense of humor.
Born and raised in Hightstown, New Jersey, Betty graduated from Hightstown High School. Though both she and Jimmy were lifelong Hightstown residents, the two met after high school and quickly discovered a shared love of music and dancing. During their early courtship, they could often be found heading to the Jersey Shore to listen to swing bands, spending evenings dancing and making memories. That love of dancing stayed with them throughout their marriage, and they continued to take to the dance floor together right up until just a few months before Jimmy’s passing—a joyful expression of the bond they shared.
Betty and Jimmy raised their four children in Hightstown before moving to Saint Petersburg, Florida, following Jimmy’s retirement. There, Betty found not only a new home but a community that greatly enriched her life. A member of the Saint Petersburg Country Club for more than 45 years, she enjoyed golf in her earlier years but truly found her passion at the bridge table. Her bridge friends became an important and cherished part of her life, providing companionship, laughter, friendly competition, and countless memories. Even after she put away her golf clubs, she continued playing bridge until just a few months before her passing—something she looked forward to and deeply treasured.
When she wasn’t playing bridge, Betty could often be found doing crossword puzzles or reading, pursuits that reflected her sharp mind and lifelong curiosity. She lived with grace, resilience, and a quiet independence that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Betty will be remembered for her warmth, her joyful spirit, and the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
Those who knew Betty take comfort in imagining her reunited with Jim—dancing together once again to the music they always loved.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in St. Petersburg on January 31 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the Saint Petersburg Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Visitation Home (visitationhome.org/donations), where Betty’s daughter Lynn resides. Please send an email at the time of donation so we can thank you personally.
