Karen (Nygren) Lanegran passed away January 10 surrounded by loved ones. Karen was born June 22, 1943 in Bemidji, MN and graduated from South St. Paul High School and the University of Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents Marjorie and Reinhold Nygren and her daughter Betsy Lanegran (Scott). She is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart David, her children Kim (Dan), Erik and Katie (Rich), her grandchildren Mali, Charlotte, Jane and Max and her sister Nancy Wallace (Jim) as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family and countless friends.
Her life overflowed with her career accomplishments, style, talents, hobbies, and travel adventures. Most notably, however, she had a hugely generous heart and inquisitive mind. She made and kept dear friends at every stage of her life because she was interested in all types of people. She remembered names and faces and could talk with absolutely anyone – inquiring, sharing, and listening. She made everyone feel seen and important. Karen translated her own confidence and self-respect into belief in and respect for others. Karen was legendary for her hosting ability. Beyond being a wonderful cook, she made everyone feel welcome and included.
Karen brought her keen eye and artistic talent to her retail career. While at Just Grand, Dayton’s Oval Room and the Wedding Shoppe, she dressed the women of St. Paul for the most important moments of their lives.
There will be a celebration of life held in February. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the South St. Paul Educational Foundation, 521 Marie Ave., South St. Paul, MN 55075.
