Douglas Richard Holm, of Tucson Arizona, peacefully passed from this life at the age of 82 on January 6, 2026.

Born on January 10, 1943 to Kenneth and Ethel Holm in Chicago, Illinois, he had a wonderful childhood filled with memories he’d recount for years to come. While in Chicago, his parents owned a delicatessen in which they lived in the back and they also lived with his mother’s parents for several years.

His brother, David, was born in 1951 while they were still in Chicago.

In 1956, when Doug was 13, his family moved to Tucson Arizona where he would build an amazing life. As a teenager, he worked at his family’s restaurant “Richies.” He was in the first graduating class at Rincon High School in 1960. Flunking out of engineering at the University of Arizona, he realized his passion and graduated with his accounting degree from the UA Business School in 1965. He passed his CPA exam in 1965 and earned a Master of Accounting in 1966. After college, he moved to Phoenix to work for Touche, Ross, Bailey, and Smart (then Touche Ross). Later he would own his own firms: Wezelman, Shook and Holm, Holm and Hestand, Holm, Hestand and Valenzuela, and Holm and Valenzuela where he would serve as a CPA for many Tucson families until his retirement in 2024.

An avid traveler, his first great adventure was a ten-month trip around the world in 1972. He would visit 35 countries while traveling by plane, bus, train, and ship, and meeting many interesting people along the way. Marrying the love of his life, Sandy, in 1978, they would go on many more adventures travelling the world together. Soon, they would be blessed with their daughter, Kathleen, in 1982 and then Sarah in 1984. The four of them would enjoy traveling the country and throughout the world as the girls grew up. In all, they visited 18 countries together as a family.

A longtime and active member of Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church, Doug loved the Lord and served the church reading the scripture lessons and as Treasurer and council member for many years. Doug also loved to hike throughout the mountains of Tucson and was an active member of the Southern Arizona Hiking Club for many years. He often led hikes through Sabino Canyon and was a “Tumamoc Master” hiking it twice a week for decades. Over the years, you may have seen one of his 150 Letters to the Editor in the Arizona Daily Star and other local newspapers or his articles in many local, state, and national professional publications, as well as the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association magazine.

Doug will be remembered for his warm smile, the way he loved to make others laugh, and his genuine kindness and honesty with everyone he met. He was devoted to his family and cherished his time with them -- especially his four precious grandchildren. Taking them on walks, getting donuts and lunch, telling them jokes, and reading them books, Doug was a wonderful Papa and treasured every moment.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sandy, his daughters, Kathleen Brown (Chad) and Sarah Betts (Jeremy), four beloved grandchildren, Jeremiah Betts, Charlotte Betts, Eli Brown, and Milo Brown, and his brother, David Holm (Barbara).

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 24, 2026 at 11am at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church.

Doug leaves a legacy of steadfast love, kindness, generosity, endurance, hard work, and faith that his family and friends will strive to carry on in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
