Obituary for Martin Ellson Deffendall

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martin Ellson Deffendall, who left this world on December 8, 2025, in Rochester, Washington, at the age of 67. He was born on June 24, 1958, in West Covina, California, to James Deffendall and Dian (Seaton) Hughes, also raised by Stepfather Mel Hughes and Stepmother Nancy Deffendall

Martin's early years were marked by a commitment to duty and courage as he proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he was a Navy Seal and a member of the Special Forces during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication to his country were only matched by his devotion to helping others. Throughout his life, Martin was deeply involved in his community, organizing local food banks and tirelessly seeking ways to support those in need, embodying the values of faith and love he held dear. Martin was at his best when he was helping others in God's love.

Professionally, Martin built a successful career as a lineman at S.M.U.D in California. After relocating to Auburn, Washington, he ultimately found his true partner in life the second time around, Elizabeth (Liz) Bradley, and moved to Rochester and got married. Together, they ran a jewelry store in the Yard Birds Mall in Chehalis, where they created a warm and welcoming environment for all who entered.

He  had a deep love for our lord  and shared his love through his thoughts, words and deeds. Martin's faith was the cornerstone of his life; he shared his love for the Lord through his actions and demeanor, enriching the lives of those around him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Liz) ; his daughters, Leeann Crosby and Jennifer Deffendall; his mother  Dian (Seaton) Hughes; his sister, Debbie Deffendall; his brother, Jeff Deffendall and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love and service.

A Celebration of Life will be held in honor of Martin on January 24, 2025, at 1 PM at the Tenino Eagles Club, located at 349 Sussex Ave W, Tenino, Washington. Friends, family, and all who knew Martin are welcome to join in remembering a truly remarkable man who touched the lives of so many.

Martin Ellson Deffendall is remembered not only for his service and contributions but for his warm heart, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever live in the hearts of those he loved and served.
