Boyd A. Sands, age 88, of Cape Canaveral, Florida and a long time resident of Glassboro, NJ passed away in Cape Canaveral Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Newark, NJ, he was a graduate of Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ and of Colby College in Maine. After starting his career as a social studies teacher at Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights, he relocated from northern New Jersey to Glassboro, NJ in 1966 to serve as assistant principal, then principal and ultimately superintendent of the Delsea Regional School
District, a position he held from 1971-1994. He later served as the executive director of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association from 1993-2006.
He was also a highly respected high school baseball umpire and basketball official for nearly three decades and was inducted into the South Jersey Sports Hall of Fame, the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame, South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame, among his many athletic and educational awards and accolades.
After retirement, he relocated to Cape Canaveral in 2006 and worked for the Washington Nationals and Royal Caribbean Cruises.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances, along with daughters Susan Armstrong (Harry), Nancy Aumuller (Roger), Karen Saville (Greg), and Lori Dwyer (Bart), and his brother Rob (Deborah.) He is predeceased by his son Michael. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Services and mass will take place 10 a.m. on Feb. 12 at The Church of Our Saviour in Cocoa Beach, FL. Burial will immediately follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the sheltering, care and adoption of homeless animal program provided by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office of Animal Services, 5100 West Eau Gallie Blvd., Melbourne FL 32934 or The Church of Our Saviour, 5301 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.
