Egidio Calandra, 89, of Gloversville, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026. Born on September 1, 1936, in Melizzano, Italy, he was the son of the late Giovanni and Maria Consiglia (Zarrelli) Calandra.
Egidio was a man of extraordinary work ethic and determination. He immigrated to the United States with his siblings, seeking a better life for his family. After arriving, he worked tirelessly for a year to establish a home, enabling him to bring his wife and young daughter from Italy to join him. He began his career as a factory worker and later became a skilled machinist at General Electric in Schenectady, New York, where he dedicated nearly 30 years before retiring.
Above all, Egidio was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was deeply attentive and caring, especially during his wife Amalia’s illness following her stroke and throughout her time in the nursing home. His greatest joy came from spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—they were truly his world. He loved bringing family together through his home-cooked meals, tended a beautiful garden (and even started a community garden at the nursing home in his later years), made his own wine, raised rabbits, and cherished the companionship of his beloved dog, Bella.
Egidio is survived by his children: Maria DeFilippis, Gino Calandra (Natalie), Nino Calandra (Jennifer), Joseph Calandra; his grandchildren: Ryan Getwright (Michelle), Kaylyn Getwright (Matt), Connor DeFilippis, Ian DeFilippis, Brandon Calandra (Dana), Elysse Calandra (Lauren), Samantha Calandra, Gabriel Calandra (Valerie), Angelina Calandra, Dominic Calandra, Joey Calandra;his great-grandchildren: Lane Getwright, Reece Getwright, Rosy Neeley, Leo Calandra, Brody Calandra; and his siblings: Filiberto Calandra and Emilia DeCicco.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Amalia; his parents; his brothers Giuseppe Calandra, Michele Calandra, and Carlo Calandra; his sisters Maria Zarrelli and Michelina D’Errico; and his grandson Anthony Calandra.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, NY.
