Richard (Rick) Eric Koontz passed away December 26, 2025 at the age of 59 in the company of family and friends in Scottsdale, AZ.  Rick was born in Pittsburgh, PA August 13, 1966, the son of Jan Charles Koontz and of Rose Marie (Mimi) Koontz.

Rick was a graduate of Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, OH.  Rick continued his post-secondary school education at Arizona State University, completing an undergraduate degree with a BA, majoring in both history and political science.  He went on to earn an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University.

Professionally, Rick advanced his career in the financial services sector, becoming an accomplished and trusted financial services advisor at Merrill Lynch & Empower.

Rick was a music lover, a gourmet cook, he loved talking about politics and he could talk endlessly about the stock market.  Rick enjoyed being around people and making people laugh.  Rick deeply loved his wife Ivy and his family.  Rick was also a devoted friend.  Rick enjoyed playing his guitar, playing tennis and, for a while, riding his motorcycle.  In his youth, he liked to push the limits, despite his lifelong challenges from Juvenile Diabetes, which ultimately led to his early death due to its complications.

Rick lived his life with resilience, courage and a wry wit.  He is sorely missed.

Rick was followed in death by his father, Jan Charles Koontz, within a week of Rick’s passing.

Rick is survived by his wife Ivy Koontz, his mother Mimi Koontz, his brother David Koontz and his sister Lynn Bargas.  He is also survived by his nephew Christopher Koontz, his nieces Caroline Koontz, Kathryn Lafountain, Jennifer Hillman, and Michelle Hillman along with his great nephew J. T. Lafountain and great niece Ashlyn Lafountain.

A memorial service was held for Rick at St. Patrick Catholic Community in Scottsdale, AZ on January 16, 2026.
