On January 28, 2026, Laura Mae Davis Tilton, age 102 1/2, passed away peacefully in her home in Englewood, Florida surrounded by family members.

 

Laura was born on July 27, 1923, on a farm in Lebanon, Ohio and moved to Dayton, Ohio at age 3 where she grew up. She was a member of the Oak Street United Brethren Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, and playing the piano. She loved the Lord and was always willing to serve others.  She graduated from Dayton Cooperative High School Class of 1941 and attended College at Otterbein.

 

Laura joined the Navy, during WW II, serving at Pensacola Naval Air Station Florida and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN as a nurse.

 

Married James E. Tilton, Sr., May 1948.  Moving from Ohio to Colorado and then to Tampa, Florida in 1953. In Tampa, Laura worked for Busch Gardens when it opened in 1958, as a secretary to the plant manager.  She then worked for USF in the Admission Department.

 

In 1962 Laura, James Sr. and family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  She worked for the Broward County School Board, working with the Health and Music education departments, retiring in 1985.

 

She moved back to the west coast of Florida in 1997 to the Venice/ Englewood area.

 

She was a member Grace United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

 

She enjoyed traveling the United States as well as parts of the Middle East, and Europe.

 

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, James Sr., by her brothers, Harold Davis (Margie) and Emerson Davis (Becky).  She is survived by her children, Lorene (Terry), Wolfe, James, Jr. (Margaret) and Sandra Tilton.

5 grandchildren Wendi (Jason) Lamb, Gail (Kevin) Shaver, Randy (Mary Catherine) Wolfe, James (Natalie) Tilton, and Paul (Allison) Tilton. 6 Great Grandchildren Jack, Hannah, Luke, and Max Lamb, Vaeda and Bodhi Tilton. Nieces, Lisa Miller, Lana and Jeff Steinecker.

 

A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Venice on Friday, February 27, 2026 at 10:30AM. The Inurnment will be later in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
