Michael “Mike” Machesko, a devoted partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born on November 19, 1934, Mike lived a life defined by service, intellect, faith, and deep personal integrity. A graduate of Duke University, where he was a proud member of the swim team, Mike carried his discipline and determination into every chapter of his life. He later earned a degree in Theology from Georgetown University, reflecting a spiritual devotion that remained central to him as a lifelong and devout Roman Catholic.

Mike served his country as a Navy corpsman, an experience that spoke to his enduring commitment to caring for others. He went on to build a distinguished professional career, working at the National Institutes of Health, where he helped co-design a left ventricle artificial heart device — a contribution that placed him at the forefront of lifesaving medical innovation. He also dedicated part of his career to public service through his work with the Department of Justice.

Beyond his many accomplishments, Mike will be remembered for the way he lived: as a straight talker with a generous heart, an avid reader with a curious mind, and a lifelong swimmer who found both joy and peace in the water. He was also a tremendous dog lover, rarely happier than in the company of his beloved canine companions.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Anna Zaperich and Michael Machesko; his stepfather, Michael Zaperich; and dear friends Chuck Greene and Roger Day.

He leaves behind his loving partner and husband, Roy David Wright Jr., known to many as Chip, whose life was immeasurably enriched by their shared years together.

Mike is also survived by his sons, Christopher Greene (and wife Kecia) and Andrew Greene (and wife Paula); his cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, and Madison Greene; two great-grandchildren, with another soon to arrive; and a circle of lifelong friends who were deeply fortunate to know him, including Amber Day, Joel Contrucci, Colleen Prasil, Mary Ellen, and Bob Riopelle.

Mike’s life was one of quiet impact — grounded in faith, guided by purpose, and sustained by love. He will be remembered not only for what he achieved, but for the steadiness of his character and the lives he touched along the way.

His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew him.
