In Loving Memory of Mary Bernice Vigil
Oct. 25, 1944 - Jan. 9, 2026
Mary Bernice Vigil, affectionately known as Bernie, was born on October 25, 1944, in Santa Clara, New Mexico. She was the eldest of fourteen children and spent most of her childhood in Espanola, NM.
In 1960, Bernie became a devoted wife to Joe P. Vigil, with whom she shared 56 years of love and partnership. She was a loving mother to five children, a grandmother to 12, great-grandmother to 22, and great-great-grandmother to Letty. Bernie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe, her parents, Joe and Louisa Padilla, and several of her siblings.
She is survived by her children: Connie Keddy, Cathy Hill, Melissa Qualls (Arthur Qualls Jr.), Dan Vigil, and Barbara Vigil (Joe Bartlett). She also leaves behind her siblings: Edna Salazar, Dolores Diaz, Manuelita Padilla, Fabian Padilla, and Nelson Padilla.
Bernie's greatest joy in life was her family. Though she was often quiet and reserved, she was the heart and soul of her family, providing love, support, and care for all those around her. Bernie was a gifted artist, wonderful cook, a talented musician who played both guitar and piano, and an avid rock collector during her lifetime. One of her favorite past times was feeding the machines near Santa Anna Pueblo. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and siblings was unparalleled, and she cherished each moment spent with them.
At the age of 81, Bernie passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She is deeply missed and will always be remembered for her warmth, kindness, homemade tortillas and unwavering devotion to her family.
ServicesServices will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, The Shrine of the Little Flower, 3424 4th St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107.
