John Robert Ahlstrom, a proud military veteran and honorable servant of his country, passed away on Saturday, January 31, at the age of 80.

Born on December 18, 1945, in Buffalo, New York, he grew up in Rocky River, Ohio, and attended Rocky River High. He answered the call to serve during the Vietnam War, enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served in Vietnam during 1967 - 1968 and was stationed at Korat and Ubon, Thailand, for two tours from 1969 to 1972. He completed his last assignment in Okinawa, Japan, in 1982, and eventually retired as a Master Sergeant in 1986. Following his military service, John returned to Charleston, South Carolina, and worked for 15 years at South Carolina Ports until retiring in 2009.

John is remembered for his humorous personality, generous spirit, his deep appreciation for family, neighborly chats, and five o’clock meetings with friends.

His legacy of love and commitment to family will continue on in the hearts of his wife of 53 years, Lumpong; his sister Barbara Benevento of Bay Village, Ohio, and adoring children and grandchildren; Sharon Jorgensen, James Ahlstrom, Madison Ahlstrom, Justin Ahlstrom, Skyler Jorgensen, Tre’ Ahlstrom, Jakob Jorgensen, and Rheona Ahlstrom.

In addition to his parents, Elmer and Lois Ahlstrom, he is preceded in death by his son, Guy Ahlstrom of Summerville, SC, and his sister Helene Ault of Estes Park, CO.

The family invites those who knew and loved John to celebrate his life on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Simplicity in Ladson, SC.
