Peter (Pete) Dulin Comstock passed away peacefully at home with family on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
Born to Stephen and Jean (Chapman) Comstock on May 26, 1938, Pete developed an early appreciation for life and a love for the outdoors that lasted throughout his years. He would regale family and friends with stories of his youth on Creek Road in Ojai; riding his horse, Coyote; fishing and hunting; swimming at the beach house at Mussel Shoals; annual fishing trips to the Forks of Salmon with his dad; his time at Ojai Valley and Midland schools; his studies at UCSB; time spent with family and friends; and, most notably, his career as a U.S. Navy submariner where he served in both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets, enjoying camaraderie during service and the local entertainments during liberty.
After retiring from the Navy, he moved to Mt. Shasta, California to be close to his parents before finally settling in Fort Jones, California, where he spent his remaining years fishing, volunteering with the American Legion, caring for his many dogs, and sharing adventures and meals with those closest to him. The man could cook (inspired by his mother) and he had a gift for appreciating the present moment and drawing others into it. Every morning, he would drink coffee on his porch, feed the birds and squirrels, and simply watch, his awe for this world and the creatures in it inexhaustible.
Whatever it is that brings you joy in life he'd want nothing more than for you to enjoy it. Those who knew him will miss that boyish grin, good-natured humor, thoughtfulness and wisdom.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Bill (Doris) Comstock, and Oakley (Joe) Goodner; and niece: Gretchen Goodner. He is survived and loved by his little sister Mary Comstock; nieces: Stephanie Goodner Breyfogle and Wendy (Brig) Anderson; nephews: Philip Goodner and Stephen Comstock; great nephews and nieces: Anthony Correale, Taran Anderson, Aeddan Anderson, Carys Anderson, Arwen Anderson, Forrest Breyfogle and Murphy Breyfogle; and Zeke his last dog.
Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Submarine Force at a later date.
So long, old sailor.
