Obituary for David Francis Cody

David Francis Cody, born on July 3, 1937, in Tenino, Washington, passed away on February 14, 2026. He lived a full and vibrant life in the Olympia and Lacey areas, where he made lasting memories and connections that defined his journey.

David graduated from Olympia High School and honorably served in the Army as a reservist after completing his education. In 1960, he married Nancy Hjelm, with whom he shared a nurturing partnership and raised four loving children.

As a professional, David was a skilled painting contractor, contributing to both commercial and residential projects within his community. His dedication and expertise allowed him to thrive in his trade until his retirement at the age of 70.

In 2000, David married Rebecca Carter, and they enjoyed 22 wonderful years together in Olympia before her passing in 2022. David cherished his role as a father and grandfather, taking immense joy in the company of his children and six grandchildren. His great sense of humor and warmth made him a valued friend to many, as he took pleasure in meeting new people and forging connections.

In his leisure time, David explored his wide-ranging interests, which included traveling, gardening, and creating exquisite bonsai gardens. An avid reader, he constantly sought knowledge and inspiration from the pages of his favorite books.

David is survived by his children: Chris Cody of Olympia, Erick and Katherine Cody of Nordland, WA, Sarah Cody Nelson of Tumwater, and Lynne and Todd Bjornethun of Meridian, ID. His family will undoubtedly carry on his legacy of love and laughter.

A celebration of his life will be held on March 28th at 1 p.m. at South Sound Manor in Tumwater. David will be profoundly missed and remembered fondly for the joy he brought into the lives of those around him.
