Cole, Richard K. Jr., M.D., 82, of Clearwater, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at Bayfront Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Dallas, TX, he first came to Florida in 1934 graduating from Orlando Senior High School in 1940, the University of Florida in 1944 and Vanderbilt Medical School in 1948. After internship at Johns Hopkins Medical Centers, he took residencies in psychiatry at the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University, and psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Association of Psychoanalysis. In WWII he served as an enlisted an and as a major he served as a psychiatrist in Korea where he received 7 Battle Stars and the Bronze Star while serving with the 8063 MASH, 3rd Field Hospital, and the First Cavalry Division. Together with the theater psychiatrist, he co-authored the definitive policy on the treatment of battle fatigue. In 1975 he returned to Florida to establish his private practice in St. Petersburg and became a founding physician for Horizon Hospital in Clearwater. He served as psychiatrist and chief of staff at Horizon, served on the staff at Bayfront, St. Anthony?s and All Children?s Hospitals, as well as being appointed an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, Tampa. His practice was primarily in the area of child and adolescent psychiatry. He was particularly interested in working with hearing impaired patients and served as medical director for several hearing impaired programs throughout the United States. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathryn, four sons, Richard, Evansville, WI, Phillip, Newtown, PA, William, Clarksville, TN and Dakotah, St. Petersburg, eight grandchildren, a sister Dorothea C. Stephenson, Orlando and a brother Edward F. Cole, M.D., Masaryktown, FL. A graveside service will be held at Old Trinity Church in Cambridge, Maryland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo, FL 33770.
