McClain, Jack A. "Big Daddy" 87, of St. Petersburg, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Jan. 27. Born in Canton, OH, he was a WWII Army Sergeant First Class in the South Pacific where he earned the Bronze Star Medal; he moved to Florida and graduated from the University of Florida; he was recalled into the Army for the Korean conflict and was assigned to the "Armed Forces Special Weapons Command" that was involved in testing the atomic bomb. He worked for the Post Office and later retired from the IRS; he was a member of St. Bede's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the American Hibiscus Society, Sunset Chapter, for over 30 years. Jack is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Catherine Katie; six children, Michael Okinawa, Japan, Susan Susie, St. Petersburg, Patrick Mooresville, NC, Timothy St. Petersburg, Gregory St. Petersburg, Brian Chesapeake, VA; a brother, Douglas Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be on Sunday, February 1st at 3 PM at Anderson McQueen, 2201 Dr. MLK St. N. Tropical attire suggested. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Hibiscus Society or the St. Anthony's Hospital Foundation.
