None Elwood Gordon “Al” Iverson, 87, of Walla Walla, WA, died Saturday, September 2, 2006 in Olympia, Washington after a brief illness. Al was born April 23, 1919 in Fargo, North Dakota and was raised in Englevale, North Dakota, which was his father’s birthplace. Al joined the navy in 1942, and served in the South Pacific as a Petty Officer First Class during WW II. He met Martha “Marty” Liebig while they both served at the naval base in Pasco, Washington in the summer of 1945. They married in Pasco in October of that year and spent their wedding night at the Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla. Al and Marty lived in several states and worked in various jobs while raising their 5 daughters. They retired in 1972 and moved to San Clemente, CA where they were very active in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the community of San Clemente. Al enjoyed traveling and playing golf. In celebration of his 80th birthday, he drove his golf cart across a portion of the United States to the U.S. Senior Open in Des Moines, Iowa. Over the years Al visited most of the 50 states and also traveled abroad to Europe and Asia. In 2002 he and Marty settled in Walla Walla to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They were members of Christ Lutheran Church and the Elks Club. Al is survived by his wife Martha Iverson, of Walla Walla; his 5 daughters and sons-in-law Janet and Greg Barnes of Olympia, WA, Joanne and Gary Brenner of Issaquah, WA, Patty and Tony Weeks of Walla Walla, Marybeth and Ike Queral of Naselle, WA, Teresa and Tim Powers of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Vivian Kugler, of Anchorage, AK; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his brother Clair Iverson, and two grandchildren Tammy and Jana. Memorial Services will be held Sept 30th at 3:00 pm, at the Lutheran Church Of The Good Shepherd in Olympia, WA. Memorials may be given in Mr. Iverson’s name to a charity of choice.
