George W. Becker
January 17th, 1920 - August 6th, 2015
George Walter Becker also known as George W. Becker, Jr., died August 6, 2015, in Port Charlotte, FL, of old age at 95. He was born to George Becker and Bertha Katherine Fuerst Becker on January 17, 1920, in Sea Cliff, LI, NY. George graduated from Sea Cliff High School. He proudly served with the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and landed in Normandy days after the infamous landing. He received the Legion of Honor award from the French government. Upon leaving the Air Corp, he and his brother and father started Becker's Shipyard in Glenwood Landing, LI, NY. George and his cousins created a special design for the Snipe, a one-design racing class, known as the Becker Snipe. He was an accomplished sailor, winning awards from his teens through his fifties. He also designed, built, and repaired boats. As a finish carpenter, he also created furniture for his family and special friends. He was a resident of Port Charlotte for over 35 years. He was a 66 year member of the American Legion Post 456 in Sea Cliff, NY. He also was a past member of Sea Cliff Yacht Club, Snipe Fleet #4, and Overboard Snipe Fleet. His father, mother, and brother, Joseph Becker predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Lynch Becker, RN, Port Charlotte, FL; daughters Linda (David) Girardin, East Palatka, FL, and June (Richard) Harmon, Port Charlotte, FL; granddaughter April Harmon and great granddaughter Brooklynn Thomson also from Port Charlotte, FL; sister Ruth (William) Stehling, Boynton Beach, FL; cousin John Becker, Sea Cliff, NY; nieces Eve Grady, Rising Fawn, GA, Elise Becker, St. Petersburg, FL, and Elizabeth Lynch, Northampton, MA; nephews Scott Becker, Winter Park, FL and Bill Stehling, Gainesville, FL, and his friends from the New Faull Inn, Placida, FL. In the fall, the family will host a celebration of George's life at the New Faull Inn. No other services are planned except for a military burial on August 10, 2015, 10:30 AM at Sarasota National Cemetery, FL. Funeral arrangements are made by Farley Funeral Homes and Crematorium, North Port, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Tidwell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238, or a charity of your choice will be appreciated.
