John “Jack” Irwin, 89, of Nokomis, FL passed away May 17, 2010. Jack was born March 2, 1921 in Irvington, NY to Agnes (Kiernan) and Robert Irwin. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on December 8, 1941. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres and the Battle of Okinowa. He married Mary Thornton January 2, 1943 while stationed in St. Augustine, FL and they had five children. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert, sisters: Margaret and Sydney. Survivors include his wife Mary, his children: Linda (Richard) Simon of Richmond, VA, Jack Irwin of Plymouth, MN, Robin Waters of Quantico, MD, Ann (Richard) Conlan of Norco, CA, Sydney (Jordan) Dunitz of Minnetonka, MN; and eight grandchildren: Tana, Robert, Sean, Kiernan, Bethie, Kenny, Madison and Jackson. Jack worked for the New York State Department of Labor in the World Trade Center in New York City. He was an elected official for the Town of Greenburgh and the Village of Irvington, NY. He was very active in civic organizations including: Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, The Rotary Club (President), VFW Post 2911 (Past Commander), Irvington Historical Society (President), The Writing Course of the Venice Public Library. He traveled extensively and loved visiting friends and his large extended family.
