Dorothy Mae Gegax (née Elliott), born June 6, 1923, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2018, at the age of ninety-five. She was born in Snohomish, Washington, on the family dairy farm, the second daughter of William C. and Clara Bish Elliott. Dorothy graduated from Snohomish High School in 1941. Shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Norman L. Gegax, in a ceremony held at the groom’s parents’ home in Clearview. After their honeymoon at Lake Crescent on the Olympic Peninsula, the couple lived in Snohomish. After Norm’s service in WWII, they moved with their growing family to a few different cities in the Puget Sound area before finally settling in Edmonds in 1951. Having grown up on a farm, Dorothy had a deep appreciation for animals and plants, and at her suburban Edmonds home raised turkeys and chickens, and cultivated gardens of vegetables and flowers. She truly had a green thumb and could coax a bloom out of any plant. Mother to four children, Dorothy primarily spent her time keeping house. She loved to bake pies and cookies; she grew rhubarb and picked wild blackberries and blueberries for pies. She also assisted her husband in his business, Norm’s Print Shop, in Edmonds. Occasionally she volunteered at Stevens Memorial Hospital and the Edmonds United Methodist Church. Dorothy was a devout Christian and loved God. After a hard day’s work, she would relax in the evening by reading the Bible or poetry, or by embroidering or crocheting. She was masterful with needlework and embroidered many dishtowels and pillow cases for the family home, and usually crocheted an edging on them as a finishing touch. She also crocheted many doilies. Her masterpiece was an embroidered table cloth she brought out for special holiday meals. Dorothy is survived by her husband of nearly 77 years, Norman Gegax, and by her four children, Shirley (Bliss) Moore, Barbara (Gene) Chandler, Gordon (Jeanie) Gegax, Karen (Scott) Campbell; by grandchildren Michael (Krystal) Fisher, Ryan (Ginger) Gegax, Teresa (Gustavo) Martinez, John Gegax, Mark (Leslie) Gegax, Greg (Lais) Gegax, Jennifer (Joel) Day, and Allegra Campbell; by great-grandchildren Lily Fisher, Madison Gegax, Gabriella Martinez, Aubrey Gegax, and Ramona Day. A private graveside service will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park, 23800 104th Avenue West, in Edmonds. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
