Louise B. De Vaney, 95, Nokomis, FL, died on January 19, 2010. She was born in Monticello, White County, Indiana on May 5, 1914. Survivors include her son, Robin, and wife Debbie of Nokomis; grandsons Rob De Vaney, and wife DeeAnn of Bradenton and Adam De Vaney and wife, Raina, of North Port; and four great-grandchildren. Louise worked in her teens and into adulthood for families in Chicago, IL and South Bend, IN among those employers were the Studebakers, Bendix, and Stephenson. She loved to relate the times she was entertained in the kitchen by a young actor named Ronald Reagan, and the famous duo of Amos and Andy, just to name a few of the celebrities that she met and was chef for. In 1937 she relocated to the Miami area where she owned a business. She was the first female civilian truck driver on the US Naval Air Station in Opa Locka, FL. She was employed as housekeeper for Rear Admiral Robert Pirie prior to the outbreak of WWII. She enlisted in the service as a WAC; ultimately being stationed at Eglin AFB near Ft Walton Beach, FL where she was a Weather Clerk until her discharge. After WWII she and her husband, the late Bob De Vaney, owned and operated a grocery store in Hialeah, FL. Early in 1948 their son, Robin, was born; and, they sold the grocery store. The family relocated to Osprey, FL where they established Osprey Texaco and shortly thereafter Bob’s Used Auto Parts, which they operated until their retirement in 1971. She counted among her friends: the families – Palmer, Blackburn, Roberts, Webster, Higel, Thornton Utz, John McDonald, and Fred Hegg. She and her husband were part of the group which established the South Trail Volunteer Fire Department; they, also, assisted in acquiring the donations required to obtain the first ambulance for the Fire Department. She served as the Fire Department Secretary for many years. During the years 1950-1971, she was an active Republican in the political arena, when that was a rare breed to be found in Sarasota County. She served in various capacities of the Osprey School PTA. One of the things she was most proud was her persuasion of the Sarasota County Commission to halt the destruction of the Osprey Elementary School in 1962. After renovation of the building it today proudly serves as the welcome center for Spanish Point.
