Wayne Edwards entered eternal life on September 30, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1937, in Ellensburg, WA, the oldest of three children to Eugene and Corneille Edwards. He had fond memories of his youth growing up on a farm, raising cattle and riding horses. Wayne moved to Seattle in 1958, and married his high school sweetheart, Loretta, in 1959 where they enjoyed a long life together. He was a member of Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, he made his living driving truck and enjoyed all the people and places he traveled but his real joy was found on the basketball court. While in the Navy he began his coaching career, followed by positions at various high schools in the Shoreline and Edmonds School Districts and a few seasons at Lakeside. He was also a private trainer at the Spartan Gym where three of his grandsons and countless others had the joy of working with him. His words of encouragement, motivation and challenge to always be the best you could be left an indelible mark on the heart of every person he encountered. Wayne would always say, “There are no mistakes only lessons” and “you didn’t lose, you just got outscored and ran out of time.” “G-pa” as he was known to his grandkids, always enjoyed watching them in their activities. Whether it was piano or dance recitals, showing cattle, or numerous sporting events he was there for them. Wayne is survived by his wife of 59 years, Loretta, children; Doug (Karen) Edwards, Debora (Marvin) Johnston and Scott Edwards, seven grandchildren; Tasha, Stephanie, Isaac, Dane, Luke, Cody and Brady and six great grandchildren; Damian, Cosmo, Talia, Peyton, Sophia, and Oliver, his siblings; Mary Lou Potter, and Warren Edwards, a step-sister, Mary Page, three step-brothers; Don, Bill and Bob Ross. Wayne was adamant about academics with his athletes and his favorite charity was the Scholar Athlete Program. A scholarship has been set up in his name; checks can be made payable to, “Foundation for Edmonds School District” and mailed to 20420 68th Ave W., Lynnwood, WA 98036. Please write “Wayne Edwards Memorial Scholarship” on the memo line. This award will be given out in May.
