Beloved husband, father, and uncle to many, Vern Chase, age 85, of Edmonds passed away peacefully at home November 11, 2018. Vern was born in Long Beach, California on June 1, 1933 to Vernon and Thelma Chase. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara, and children Thomas Chase (Toni) of Mechanicsburg, PA, Jeanne Tiscareno (Bob) of Seattle, and Dave Chase (Coleen) of Bellingham. Always playful at heart, he was a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren, Bobby, Abby, Mimi, Danny, Tommy, and Cam; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bronson. He will be remembered as eternally kind to everyone, a great family man and a person that lived out Christian values every day of his life. Vern was a person of unstoppable energy and zest for life. His insatiable love of traveling the world was demonstrated during both work and vacation as he traveled to every continent except Antarctica. Vern graduated from South Pasadena High School (CA) in 1951. He attended Santa Clara University. After graduating he was able to immediately satisfy his passion for aviation by joining Flying Tiger Line. He then combined his love of aviation and travel when he left for two years to go on active duty as a Navy aircraft loadmaster based in Morocco. He returned to Flying Tigers and met Barbara while living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The air cargo industry required family moves to Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, back to Seattle, and back to San Francisco while working for West Coast Airlines, Air West, and World Airways. When he left the private aviation industry, he moved to Oregon and started working for the Port of Portland. After two years there he was sent on a temporary assignment to Tokyo, Japan as the Director, Far East Trade Development. He returned to Portland where he continued to work for the Port of Portland and eventually the Port of Valdez, AK and his own firm, Alaska-Northwest Development Services. When he and Barbara retired in 1998, they moved to Seattle to be closer to their children. They eventually settled down in Edmonds. In Edmonds, he was involved with City of Edmonds activities, the YMCA, and Rotary. He and Barbara were honored with their 2006 selection as Edmonds Citizens of the Year. Vern loved his family fiercely and was enamored with his grandchildren. He enjoyed working in the fledgling air cargo industry, supporting Barbara's numerous civic activities, and the professional and personal pursuits of his children. The family requests donations be sent to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Rotary Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
