Mountlake Terrace Mayor, Jerry E. Smith, passed away in his sleep December 14, 2018 in his home in Mountlake Terrace, WA. Jerry was born 1-20-1941 in Deer Island, Oregon to George C. Smith & Leta G. Smith. Jerry was the youngest of 11 children; Floyd, Delbert, Robert, Eleanor, Buck, Coleman, Beulah, Fred, Betty and two deceased siblings prior to Jerry’s birth. Jerry grew up in Brownsville-Roseburg-Glide, Oregon. Graduated from Glide High School and enlisted in the US Army 10-Nov-59. Jerry was stationed at Fort Lawton in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, Washington were he met the love of his life Judith Ann Bowles. Jerry & Judi were married in her home town of Sawyer, WA Saturday, December 15, 1962. Jerry & Judi welcomed their first child; Stephanie Denise Smith 3-May-63. After the US Army, Jerry joined Seattle Police Department in 1968. In early 1968, they moved from Ballard to Mountlake Terrace. Jerry & Judi welcomed their second child; Scott Darren Smith 9-Sept-68. Stephanie & Scott attended the local schools and graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School in 83’ & 87’. Jerry and Judy owned two Auto Parts businesses over the years; Terrace Auto Parts & Cedar Plaza Auto Parts. Jerry was active in several local organizations; M.T.Y.A.A. & President for (25 Years), ran Fire Work stands (25 years), Neutral Zone, National Night Out, Lynnwood Eagles, Charter member Terrace-Brier Lions Club, Master Mason Shoreline Masonic Lodge #248, Nile Shriner [Shurtah Unit], Evergreen State Fair Board of Directors, Tour de Terrace 93’ to present, Mountlake Terrace Senior Group, Community Transit Board Member, SnoCom [911 Dispatch], Snohomish County Emergency Radio System [SERS], LEOFF 1 Disability Board, Regional Fire Authority (RFA), Lake Ballinger Watershed forum. Jerry was elected to the Mountlake Terrace council in 2001, Elected Mayor by council in 2004 to present. Jerry was instrumental in getting the following projects in MLT; Sound Transit Park & Ride Parking Garage & lot, Civic Campus Redevelopment, Light Rail Station, Main Street Redevelopment, New Fire Department Building, securing Federal monies for major projects in MLT; replacing aging infrastructures, park & street improvements, main street Revitalization Project, Ballinger Park Master Plan. In his off time Jerry enjoyed spending his time with his family camping in their Winnebago exploring the great outdoors of Washington/Oregon/Canada/Alaska, coaching his son’s soccer teams, racing figure-eight race cars at Evergreen Speedway, spending time with family & friends at Lake Patterson (Winthrop, WA), Hunting, Fishing the local lakes, rivers and oceans, spending time on the house boat in the waters of Lake Shasta, CA, going to Husky Rose bowl games, working with his vehicles and heavy equipment, going to the casino (spending his kids inheritance). Jerry’s travels also took him through out the US, Canada, Alaska (driving the Alcan Highway twice), Hawaii, Germany and China. He enjoyed meeting new people and building life-long friendships. Jerry Smith is survived by his loving Wife Judi A. Smith, (Preceded in death by) Daughter Stephanie D. Smith, Son Scott D. Smith, Daughter-in-law Tisa S. Smith, Grandson Michael C. Riser, Granddaughter Samantha D. Costello-Wife Casey Costello, loyal dogs Gus & Brittany and grand dogs Tucker & Lewis. Jerry left behind many family members, close relatives, love-ones, friends and numerous business acquaintances. The Smith family is currently setting up a memoriam fund at Mountain Pacific Bank in Jerry’s name. In lieu of flowers, please make donations at Mountain Pacific Bank under the name of “Jerry E. Smith Memoriam Fund”. The funds will be used for Mountlake Terrace Community Projects. A memorial service is being planned for January 25, 2019 in Edmonds, WA. Specific location(s) are being determined.
