Catherine (Katie) Baumgarten, Etz, 91, died Monday September 7, of natural causes. She was the daughter of Margaret Markel and Clement DeLude. She is survived by sisters Rosemary Rood and Ann (Ralph) Nichols, sister-in-law Helen DeLude many nieces nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Charles DeLude, John DeLude, Bernard DeLude (Joyce) and brother-in-law James Rood. Katie was born on May 20, 1918 in Marine City in her family home. She graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1936 and then became a licensed hair dresser. She married Charles Baumgarten on Feb 27, 1943 at Holy Cross church. They were married 44 years until his death in March of 1987. Katie was an entrepreneur who owned and operated her own business in Marine City for many years. Kay’s Beauty Salon was a prominent location that many local ladies patronized. Kay and Chuck retired to their beloved vacation home, Belly Acers, located on the AuSabel River outside of Grayling. During this phase of “retirement” Katie enjoyed visits from her family, canoeing and deer hunting. She was an avid fire arms hunter and bagged many a buck but was also skilled with the bow and arrow. Volunteering at the Mercy Hospital, she became president of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary in 1975/76. Kay and Chuck moved to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and warmer climate but returned several times to Michigan to visit family. In Florida, Katie became very involved with the Englewood Lions Club. She was president of the Lions Auxiliary, and became the first woman president of the Lions Club in District 35-1, and the first woman Zone Chairman. She also served as secretary and various other positions with the Lions organization. Her volunteering was also evident at her parish, St Francis of Assisi Church, in Englewood. Katie served as president of the Women’s Guild, lector and usher. In June of 1991 she married Col. Winton Etz. They were married 6 years until his death in 1997.
