Edward Keith Smelser
December 26, 1971 - October 1, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family of Edward Keith Smelser announces his untimely passing on October 1, 2026 at the age of 54.
Edward was born on December 26, 1971 in San Pablo, Ca. to his parents, Virginia and Donald Smelser, and was welcomed home by his sister, Stacey Ott. He spent the first year of his life in El Sobrante and in 1973 his family moved to Jackson to be closer to family. Ed loved growing up in this wonderful community surrounded by family and friends. He spoke fondly of his childhood and he cherished the relationships he developed with family and friends throughout his life.
Ed became an avid reader at a very young age and his passion for reading continued throughout his life. He enjoyed reading a variety of genres including science fiction, politics, and history, but he had a special affinity for comics which he took pleasure in reading his entire life.
Ed’s intelligence was evident at an early age. He excelled in school and was the valedictorian of the 1990 graduating class of Argonaut High School. He amazed others with his broad knowledge when watching Jeopardy or playing Trivial Pursuit. When asked how he knew certain things, he would simply answer, “I must have read it once.” After attending college at UC Davis for a short time, he changed paths and pursued a variety of jobs throughout his life including bartending, real estate property inspections, and most recently surveillance at the Jackson Rancheria Casino.
Although Ed had no children of his own, he maintained a loving bond with his niece, nephew, and great-nephews. He reveled in their activities and accomplishments and spoiled them with meaningful gifts.
Ed was preceded in death by his mother Virginia Smelser, father Donald Smelser, grandparents Ed and Mary Kramer, and grandmother Irene Smelser. He is survived by his sister Stacey Thomas (Mike), niece Brittany Heissenbuttel (Will), nephew Sean Thomas, great-nephews Clayton and Walker Heissenbuttel, and a large extended family.
Ed will be remembered for his large stature, brilliant mind, and kind heart; and he will be missed by many. May he rest in peace.
In honor of Ed’s life, family and friends are invited to an Open House on November 14,
2026 from 1:00-5:00 at the home of Mike and Stacey Thomas.
