Martin Pete Urjevich
Mar 22, 1925 — Oct 28, 2026
Born March 22, 1925, to Petar and Luce Urjevich, on Broadway Street in Jackson, California, Martin Urjevich lived a life that spanned a century, and he witnessed a world that reshaped itself many times over. A proud Croatian, a devoted Catholic, and an amazing father to 9 children: Allard Craig Gustafson (deceased), Marie Waters, Peter Urjevich (deceased), Catherine Colburn, Martin Urjevich, Matthew Urjevich, Lisa Urjevich, Kalib Hornsby (deceased), and Jennifer Urjevich Simon.
He was a strong man, a hard worker, a business owner, and someone who always showed up for those who needed him. Martin served in World War II and was a B-17 navigator. His career spanned from grave digging in high school, learning from books at the library how to build a house by hand, to working the green chain at a sawmill, and working for Aerojet; he lived for hard work. While working for Caltrans, he also owned and operated the Plymouth Hotel Bar in Plymouth, California. He was a friend to all and a hero to many. After retiring from Caltrans, he enjoyed golfing, watching sports, and helping people in his community.
Martin lived his life with honesty, integrity, humility, and a strong sense of what was right. He never held grudges or carried anger. He stood by his friends and family and always showed up for those who needed him. He accepted people for who they were, treated everyone with respect, and always rooted for the underdog. His faith was an important part of his life, and he prayed for everyone. If you were fortunate enough to know Martin, you can be certain he carried you in his prayers.
One of Martin’s most remarkable qualities was his extraordinary memory. Sharp and observant even in his final days, he remembered people, events, and details that others had long forgotten. He seemed to carry an entire community’s history in his mind, often knowing not only the person’s story, but the stories of their parents, grandparents, and extended family. He was a keeper of confidences, a living link to the past, and a treasure trove of memories from a century of life.
In 2013 he moved to Pine Grove with his youngest daughter and son-in-law to finish out his golden years. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and quiet dignity that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In Martin’s honor, have a glass of red wine with dinner, quietly help someone in need, check on your elderly neighbors, enjoy the little things in life, and always be grateful for what you have. May we carry these simple acts of kindness forward, stand strong for one another, remain humble, and never forget the greatest things in life are the simplest. If you knew Martin, raise a glass, say a prayer, and do something kind for someone who needs it.
