Ruth Ann Crain
May 9, 1924 — May 7, 2026
Ruth Ann Crain (May 9, 1924 – May 7, 2026)
Ruth Ann Crain, 101, a long-time resident of Plymouth, CA, passed away peacefully at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson, CA on May 7, 2026.
Ruth was born in Willow Springs, CA on May 9, 1924 to the late Delmont and Angie French. The eldest of two children, Ruth was raised learning the values of hard work, family, tradition, and faith which would guide her throughout her life. She attended school and played softball at the one-room Shenandoah School in Shenandoah Valley. Ruth met George Upton and they married March 26, 1944. They had four children which they raised on the ranch in Shenandoah Valley until his passing in 1955.
Ruth’s second marriage was to Jack Crain of Plymouth, CA on August 6, 1960. Together Ruth and Jack owned and operated Crain’s Market in Sutter Creek for seventeen years. Later in life, her friendly face and warm smile could also be seen at her daughter Karen’s diner, Marlene and Glen’s, working hard and staying active well into her nineties.
Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking (especially her Christmas treats and custom birthday cakes), tending to her many animals and garden, serving others in her community, and spending time with her friends and family. Ruth was an active member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West Forrest Parlor #86 in Plymouth for over seventy years and of the Catholic church. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of dignity, grace, generosity, and strength.
Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, George Upton; second husband, Jack Crain; son, Robert Upton; daughter Janet Upton (Parker); son-in-law, William Parker; son-in-law, James Meyer; sister, Dorothy Doughty. Ruth is lovingly remembered by her daughters Karen Martin (Mike), Jeanne Meyer, stepdaughter Gloria Adkins (Cory), as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
