Edward "Ed" Coffey Jr.

September 16, 1949 — December 5, 2024

Live life to the fullest because you aren't guaranteed tomorrow...Catch you later

Edward Coffey Jr. also known as Ed, Roger, Butch or Big Dog, passed away on December 5, 2024, at the age of 75, in Tacoma, Washington. Born on September 16, 1949, in the same city he called home throughout his life, Ed lived with a fierce independence and a deep commitment to both service and family.

A proud graduate of Curtis High School in University Place, Washington, Class of 1968, Ed went on to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force in 1969. His military career spanned a decade until his Honorable discharge in 1979. Known affectionately among his fellow servicemen as a “troublemaker within the regulations,” Ed brought a unique spirit and unwavering dedication to his role—always pushing boundaries while remaining true to duty.

After being stationed at McChord Airforce Base while attending a party he met this little firecracker that had no problem putting him in his place, the best woman in the world (and he had been around the world a few times). Soon after Ed married Lacricia Greer on October 4, 1970. They built their lives over 55 years of marriage, their 2 daughters, and many groups they were actively involved in.

Ed was a devoted loving husband and was with her until the end. In the last days of Ed's life he was able to pass away at home surrounded by his loved ones, like he always wanted. He wanted to be in his dream home, the one he never thought he would have.

After his military service ended, Ed also built a civilian career rooted in hard work and craftsmanship. He worked multiple trades before joining the City of Tacoma Environmental Services (TAGRO), where he remained until retiring in 2016 to spend time with "his new boss" the wife. His work ethic and mechanical aptitude were evident not only in his professional life but also in the hobbies that brought him joy.

Ed had a passion for working on cars and was an accomplished marksman. He enjoyed varmint hunting and took great pride in teaching others how to repair or modify their own rifles and reload ammunition. These skills were more than pastimes—they were part of how he connected with others and shared what he loved most.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters DeAnna Coffey and Lynette Zukowski; grandchildren Amethyst Arroyo, Tristin Lees, Jacob Beritich, Destiney Dean, Micahl Dean, and Jeremiah Beritich; sister Candyce Kiely; and brothers David Coffey, Gary Coffey, and Steven Coffey.

Ed was preceded in death by his mother Gladys Butler, stepfather Marvin Butler, and—following shortly after him—Lacricia Coffey on October 9, 2025.

Those who knew Ed will remember him for living life on his own terms. He often said, “Live life to the fullest because you aren't guaranteed tomorrow,” a philosophy he embodied every day. In his own words: “Catch you later.”
