Born January 14 1947 in Bremerton Washington, Mike faced significant challenges early in life due to disabilities. Institutionalized at age 4, this deeply affected his older sister Rhonda, who later encouraged him to take control of his own life. At 20, Mike chose independence not only for himself but also for those still confined within institutional walls. He sought employment and began building a loving family with his wife Diane, also a former Rainier School resident, and their daughter Tara. They were proud homeowners and active members of their community. 

"If I can do it, you can do it!" was one of his rallying cries as he encouraged others to join the fight against segregation.  "People First, disabilities second" embodies the simple respect he championed.  "Shut them down" is the call to action until the day institutionalization ends. Mike inspired thousands in Washington state, many of whom continue the fight for independence and inclusion. 

Mike was a passionate advocate for people with disabilities, inspiring many with his charisma and dedication. He chaired numerous organizations and contributed to important legislative changes that improved countless lives.

He was predeceased by his wife Diane in 2016 after a 47-year, happy marriage. This was his greatest heartbreak. It was then he noticed that some adult family homes can still be run like institutions, deepening his pain. He found comfort with his family on the Hood Canal, where the community embraced him even though his Green Bay Packers took precedence over the Seahawks. He lived his last years content, refusing to retire from advocacy. 

He is survived by his daughter Tara, a dedicated teacher; his grandson Joe; his sisters Rhonda and Tammy; and a large extended family who remember him as a hero and champion for disability rights. Michel's legacy continues to inspire efforts toward inclusion and equality. Michel passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on September 17, 2025, at 7:20 pm in Silverdale, Washington, with family by his side. His remembrance will be held on
