Doris Wilson Vickery

And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. — Hamlet Doris “Dobie” Beatrice Burton Wilson Vickery, 101, died on April 10, 2012 at her winter home in Nokomis, Florida. She also lived in Mannsville, NY and formerly, with her husband, Roger, in Baldwinsville, NY. The family will celebrate her long life with a memorial at her beloved cottage on Lake Ontario at a later date. No public services are planned at this time. She was a renowned senior English teacher in Baldwinsville, NY and earlier in Owego, NY, where she was happy to get her first teaching job during the depths of the Great Depression. As a teacher, she was advisor to the senior class, the yearbook, the dramatics club and even an etiquette club. At the time of her death, she was still hearing from her former students, including one from 78 years ago, who sent her an Easter card the week before she died. Doris co-founded the Baldwinsville Theater Guild with Rosemary Sinnett Nesbitt in 1941, and she directed all of their plays into the late 1950s. That theater guild is still active, 71 years later. Doris was well-known in Central New York, where her talks on books and plays were highly regarded. In one winter, she delivered her popular presentation on The Miracle Worker to twelve different groups. She was well-known for her Travelers’ Club papers, given on subjects from Lebanon to Islands of the Pacific. She was a member of the Female Charitable Society of Baldwinsville, the second oldest women’s charitable organization in the United States. She wrote a play for them that was performed at their 190th anniversary in 2006, at which she was honored. As president of the Baldwinsville Community Council, she helped create the village’s first park and beach. She also presided over the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center, with over 200 members. She was an active member of the Parent Teachers Association, the Episcopal Women’s Auxiliary and, later, the Outlook Club of Sandy Creek, NY and the Willing Workers of Ellisburg, NY. She loved writing and was a member of two writing groups in Venice, FL. Doris was graduated from the University of Rochester in 1932, where she was president of her Class. She is survived by Nan Winters of Nokomis, FL, Roger Vickery of Oakland, CA, and Christopher Vickery of Queens, NY. Additionally, she was grandmother of William Winters, of London, UK; Christopher and Wendy Winters of CT; Lisa Evans Clark of Charlotte, NC; Joshua and Alex Vickery of New York City, and great grandmother of Kristin and Nikolas Winters, Roger and Matthew Winters, Lindsey Winters, Kendall Evans, and Ty Clark. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger, in 1992. Her twin sister, Helen, died in 1966. The family will celebrate her long life with a memorial at her beloved cottage on Lake Ontario at a later date. No public services are planned at this time.
