Dorothy Elizabeth Hoover

Dorothy Elizabeth Hoover, 94, of Nokomis, FL, formerly of New Jersey, passed away January 10, 2015. Mrs. Hoover was a member of the Earl Held All-Girl Marching Band and Symphony Orchestra, made famous by Mr. Held's association with John Philip Souza. She also directed her own all-girl jazz band, playing trumpet, piano, and drums. She was particularly proud of being the first female General Manager of a major food company. She retired from Grand Union Stores in 1981, having managed the Grand Union here in Venice. In 1983 Dorothy became the assistant director of the preschool at Venice Nokomis United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. An only child herself, Dorothy leaves behind her only child Dolores (Ray) Batiato of Nokomis, grandchildren David of Naples and Michael of Venice, and great grandchildren Bryson of Michigan and Peyton and Kyle of Naples. Dorothy will be laid to rest at 10:00am on Saturday, January 17, 2015 with an inurnment service in the Rotunda Chapel at Venice Memorial Gardens.
