Dorris Ann Wasson

Dorris Ann Wasson, née Smith, passed away peacefully at her home at Village on the Isle in Venice, Florida, on September 22, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. She was 92 years old.

Dorris Ann was born on May 1,1934 in Bessmer, AL before her family moved to Jackson, MS when she was 2 years old. She graduated from Central High School in Jackson in 1952 and then attended Auburn University where she graduated in 1956 with a double major in Laboratory Technology and Medical Technology. She later attended Rollins College in Winter Park, FL and earned her master's degree in teaching. She taught in the Florida public school system for over 30 years, as a high school chemistry and physics teacher with her last position before retirement as the head of the Pine View School science department in Osprey, FL.

As a young girl, Dorris Ann was a very active member of the Galloway Memorial Methodist Church in Jackson and met her future husband, Warren Wasson, in the youth group there. They were married in 1956 at Galloway Memorial and began their life together.  Warren was a minister with the United Methodist church, serving the Florida Conference for 43 years. They lived in various cities in Florida with his 10 church appointments, with the last being Grace United Methodist Church in Venice, before retiring, where they were both very involved in many activities at Grace and in retirement with the Suncoast Emaus group.

Dorris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Warren, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage. Their long life together stands as a lasting testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love.

She is survived by her 4 children, son Luke Wasson of Orlando, FL, daughter Edna Kittendorf (Gary) of Venice, FL, daughter Nancy Wasson of Birmingham, AL and son, Wesley Wasson (Amy) of Cumming, GA, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, her brother Layton Smith (Pat) of Jackson, MS, her sister, Sandra HIndsman of Jackson, MS and numerous nieces and nephews in MS.

In the love of her family and friends and in the many quiet ways she touched the lives around her, Dorris leaves behind a legacy of warmth, faithfulness, and deep connection. She will be remembered with love and gratitude by all that knew her, and her passing leaves a deep absence in the hears of her family and friends.

May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her and peace to all who were blessed to know her.
