Evelyn I. D'Andrea

Evelyn I. D'Andrea, 96, of Venice Florida died on August 10, 2016 at The Springs Nursing Home in Sarasota after a long illness. Evelyn was born on December 19, 1919 in Chicago, daughter of Ernest and Mary Irene (Wells) Johnson. She was the youngest of four children. She was raised in Jersey City, N.J., where she met her future husband, Emil C. D'Andrea, and graduated from Snyder High School. They were married in the Sacred Heart Church in Jersey City, New Jersey on June 15, 1940, and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on June 15, 2015. Shortly after their marriage, Evelyn worked as a fashion model for John Robert Powers in Manhattan, New York. When Emil was accepted into officers' training in the Army Air Force during World War II, Evelyn accompanied him throughout the U.S. as part of that training. Following the War, they moved back to Jersey City, where their two daughters were born and Emil graduated from Rutgers University. Emil's career moved them to California, where their son was born, and they returned to New Jersey a few years later to make their home in Cranford. In 1992, Evelyn and Emil retired to Venice, Florida where they lived for many years on Turnberry Drive in the Waterford community and then at the Inn at Aston Gardens prior to their move to The Springs in December 2015. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, long walks, traveling, dancing, poetry, letter writing, reading, and crossword puzzles. She was regarded by all as a lively and vivacious person. With her sparkling turquoise eyes, clarion voice, quick laugh, and love of colorful idioms, Evelyn brought much joy to her family and delight to her friends. Evelyn is survived by her three children, Laura Tyson of Berkeley, California, Susan Lee of Lakewood, New Jersey, and Alan D'Andrea of Winchester, Massachusetts, and by her three grandchildren, Elliot, Vincent, and Erika. Funeral services were held for Evelyn on August 15, 2016 at the Farley Funeral Home in Venice Florida. A blessing was offered by a deacon of Epiphany Cathedral Catholic Church, where Evelyn and Emil had been parishioners for many years. Inurnment followed shortly thereafter at Venice Memorial Gardens. Donations may be in the name of Evelyn D'Andrea to the American Association of Cancer Research (www.aacr.org.) Evelyn was a beloved wife and family member and a cherished friend.
