George Edward Frost

George Edward Frost, 95 years old, passed away at his home in Sarasota, Florida on June 2, 2013. His death was peaceful, with his four daughters at his side: Lillian F. Dean, Maygene F. Daniels, Carol Ann Frost, and Susan F. Davis. He also is survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Barber Frost, his beloved wife of nearly 66 years, passed away in 2009. George Frost was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the eldest of three brothers. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, and received his law degree from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He worked as a patent attorney for General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, and later for several law firms (including his own) in Chicago. In 1966, he became Director of the Patent Law Division of General Motors Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. After his retirement from General Motors in 1983, he re-entered private law practice and became an expert witness in patent cases. Throughout his career, George was a leader and teacher in the field of patent law. He argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, taught law at the John Marshall and University of Chicago Law Schools, and received numerous awards for his service to the law profession. He was the author of “Patents in Action ââ‚"" from Watt to the Internet” (2004) a historical analysis of patent law and its influence on invention in America. Although very busy with his law career, George always found time for camping, canoeing, and hiking with his wife Elizabeth, daughters, and grandchildren. Favorite places were the Smoky Mountains, the north shore of Lake Superior; western national parks, and Alaska. George moved from Bloomfield, Michigan to Sarasota, Florida in 2009. His keen intellect, sense of humor, and positive approach to life will be missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, 563 Bay Isles Road, Longboat Key, Florida 34228-3142. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Sarasota Opera; the Season of Sharing Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County; or All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, Longboat Key, Florida.
