Herbert Holman

Herbert A. Holman, 88 of Nokomis, FL, passed away November 2, 2016. Herb was born June 20, 1928 at his home in Norwood, Massachusetts to Emma K. (Richardson) and Charles F. Holman. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Holman (1954-1980). Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Ann; daughter, Dianne and son-in-law, Tom of Osprey, FL; and three grandchildren, Jennifer of Philadelphia, PA, Kimberly of Pittsburgh, PA and Douglas of Osprey, FL. Herb graduated from Norwood High School and joined the Army. He was awarded the World War 11 Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. When he returned in 1948 he went to Purdue University, graduating as a Civil Engineer in 1952, he remained an avid Boilermakers fan. He married Ann Pitman on September 6, 1952 in Worcester, MA. Herb had a successful career and retired as a Vice President of Construction. Herb and Ann lived in 24 different places over the years and also visited many countries and all 50 states. They lived in Pittsburgh, PA for 8 years and became diehard Steeler Fans, attending two of the four 1970’s Steeler Super Bowls. They retired to Sunset Beach, North Carolina in 1992 and lived there for 22 years (the longest they ever lived in one spot!) Herb was a very good single digit golfer in his prime with four Hole-in-One’s. But he was even more proud of “Shooting his Age” on several occasions! They also enjoyed horse races and spent several years as Owners, racing at Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont tracks in New York and New Jersey. In September, 2014, Herb and Ann moved for the last time to Florida to be close to family. Herb was an amazing healthy man that did not spend one day in the hospital until he was in his 80’s. Unfortunately his diagnosis of cancer this summer was devastating and took him from us very quickly. Those who knew him will always remember his sense of humor and zest for life. He will be missed and we are very blessed and grateful for the time we had together.
