James Robert Dougherty

James Robert Dougherty of Venice, Florida, Chief Design Engineer for the U.S. Coast Guard prior to his retirement, passed away on August 17, 2017. He was 89 years of age. Mr. Dougherty was born November 10, 1927 in Hazelton, PA and came to Venice, FL in 1987 from Pasadena, MD. A licensed and registered Professional Engineer he was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 in Annapolis, MD, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8118 in Venice, American Legion Post # 159 in Venice, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 2378 in Englewood, FL and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. A U.S. Navy combat action veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and as a Korean War veteran in North Korea in 1950 and 1951. James was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anne Ceceila Dougherty and his son, James Jr. of Buffalo, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00AM. Burial with military honors will follow at Venice Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible memorial donations may be made to the Florida Veterans for Common Sense Fund, 100 Wallace Avenue, Suite 240, Sarasota, Florida 34237.
