Lawrence W. Lindquist

Lawrence W. Lindquist, 92, of North Port, FL, died October 14, 2013. Loving husband of Kathleen and father of two daughters: Wendy (John) Carter of Arcadia, FL and Valerie (Oliver) Stalsbroten of Anacortes, WA; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Lawrence was born March 9, 1921 in Galesburg, IL to Ida (Johannesson) and John Fridtjof Lindquist. He served in the US Army during WW2, European Theater of Operations (Iceland, England, France, Germany). He received a Bachelor of Theology from Northern Baptist, Theological Seminary; a Master of Arts in History and Literature of Religion from Northwestern University; and a D. Phil, Institute of Social Anthropology from Oxford University (Exeter College). Fullbright Scholar , 1963 for study in India and travel throughout Southeast Asia. Lawrence traveled and studied in Southeast Asia through the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in 1969. He was an Instructor of Religious Studies (1 year) and Political Science (1 year) at Brown University; Professor of Anthropology, Rhode Island College, Providence, RI, also serving assignments as Director of Social Sciences and Director of International Education from time to time. He designed and taught the first courses in Cultural Anthropology ever offered at RIC. He developed the Department of Anthropology and Geography. Retired in 1983 with rank of Professor Emeritus in Anthropology. An Honorary life-member of Kappa Delta Pi (an International Honor Society in Education); member, Oxford Society and Exeter College Association. He was a licensed lay-preacher, Phillips Memorial Baptist Church while residing in RI and was active on several RI Baptist state committees. A volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and American Heart Association, he also was an Eagle Scout.
