Leroy M. Konzelman

Leroy Michael Konzelman, Ph.D., died on Friday, February 17, Venice Bayfront Hospital. He was 80 years old. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Dr. Konzelman lived in Livingston and Florham Park, New Jersey, before moving to Nokomis, Florida in 1999. He was a graduate of St. Peter's College in 1958, where he earned a bachelor's degree in organic chemistry. He did graduate work at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, before completing his master's degree and doctorate in organic chemistry at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, in 1964 and 1966. He was a member of the first doctoral class in organic chemistry at Seton Hall. Dr. Konzelman worked as a chemist at Schering Corporation, American Cyanamid Company, Chemical Dynamics, and Schweizerhall, all in New Jersey. He was a member of the American Chemical Society. He retired in late 1998. He served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves in 1959-60. Often called a Renaissance Man by his friends, he had many varied interests. Lee loved playing pool and was famous among family and friends for his love of World War II military and naval history. An avid builder of model warplanes and ships, he contributed many of his completed models to the Military Heritage and Aviation Museum of Punta Gorda, Florda. Fishing, however, was by far his favorite pastime, and he went fishing at least twice a week for many years. He was a devoted family man, and especially cherished time spent with his wife and family. Well known for his love of animals, he volunteered for a number of years at the Suncoast Animal Shelter. He also volunteered at the Center of Hope homeless shelter. He was a lead usher at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Lee is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mercedes; his children, Michael and his wife, Sharon; Patricia; and Christine and her husband Raymond; and two grandsons, Kenneth and Matthew Konzelman. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Saturday, February 25th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Osprey, with inurnment following the Mass in the church memorial garden. The family has suggested that memorial donations in Lee's name be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Shriners, The Center of Hope in Nokomis, or the Knights of Columbus Annual Appeal.
