Mary Moyer

Mary Elizabeth Mosiman Moyer - 99 (May 9, 1918 - January 20, 2018) Venice, FL —– formerly of Columbia, SC . Mary was born in Gahana, Ohio and attended primary schools in Newark and Concord Pike, DL, and secondary schools in Oxford, PA. She earned an Associates Degree in Education from Capital University in Columbus, OH before teaching in Whitehall and Columbus schools. In 1940 she married Clifford A. Moyer whose career took them to Washington, D.C., Oklahoma City, De Moines and Waterloo (IA), Hammond and Michigan City (IN), Philadelphia, PA and Columbia, SC. Mary was an active volunteer in schools and especially in churches in each of these locations and became an accomplished artist-painter in South Carolina. She and Cliff remained in Columbia, SC when Cliff retired the first time to become the creator and first Executive Director of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Their marriage lasted over 56 years until Cliff died in 1997. Mary was predeceased by a sister, Janice Butcher, and is survived by son, Michael (Kathryn) of Oro Valley, AZ and Elk Rapids, MI; daughter Jean Moyer White (Sammis) of Milwaukee, WI.; and sister Ellen Palmer of Canton, PA.. Mary was blessed to have five grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her interest and appreciation of the arts, her stimulating teaching of young adult classes in her churches, her love of playing cards and for keeping an attractive, welcoming and comfortable home.
