Mary Louise Dayre Starr

Mary Louise Dayre Starr, 101, died in Crofton, MD on April 4, 2012. She was born on August 15, 1910 in New York, NY, where she attended Hunter College for two years. She was married to Francis Webster Starr from June 30, 1935 until his death in 1983. Mary was a comparison shopper for Macy’s in New York City, which solidified her lifelong love of, and obsession with shopping. She served as the Deputy Borough Clerk, Closter Municipal Court Clerk, and recorded all planning and city council meetings in Closter, NJ for over 20 years. She received the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey, Inc. award for her work. Mary was a member of the Girl Scouts of the United States from early childhood into adulthood, where she made friends that remained close for the rest of their lives. As a couple, Mary and Webster traveled extensively, beginning with their cross-country honeymoon from Manhattan to Yellowstone and back during the summer of 1935. After her parents’ death, Mary and Webster cared for her sister Margaret until her marriage. The couple traveled to every state in the continental US as well as Canada and Mexico, enjoying many state and national parks in their Coachman motor home. Mary retired to Venice,Florida with Webster in 1978, and in retirement served as an officer of her Deborah Hospital Foundation chapter, and along with her sister Margaret, proudly served as Census Takers for the 1980 US Census. She and her husband spent much of their retirement enjoying visiting with family and lifelong friends, boating in the Intercoastal waterway, swimming in their pool,and parenting many of their grandchildren during the summer months. After 20 years in Venice, she moved to Atlanta, GA to live with her younger daughter Pam in 1997, and then to Crofton, MD in 2006 to live with her eldest daughter Nancy. Mary will be interred beside her husband immediately following the Mass at a graveside service, Venice Memorial Gardens, 1950 Center Road, Venice, FL. A luncheon will be served following internment. If preferred, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs Starr’s name to the Girl Scouts of the US at www.girlscouts.org/support, or your local Hospice chapter. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Web, and her sister Margaret.
