Mauro C. Sardanopoli

Mauro C. ""Mario"" Sardanopoli, 82, formerly of Rockland County, NY, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2018 after a brief illness in Venice, FL. Mauro was born in The Bronx, NY to Vito and Teresa Sardanopoli on April 26, 1935. He attended P.S. 32 and Roosevelt High School in The Bronx. On September 14, 1958, he married Benita ""Bonnie"" Merenda. In 1965, Mauro and Bonnie moved to Rockland County where they would enjoy living and raising their family for nearly 35 years. In 1955, Mauro enlisted in the New York Army National Guard working out of Kingsbridge Armory, Bronx, NY. During these early years, he also moonlighted as a New York City taxi cab driver. Mauro was one of the first National Guardsmen to attend Active Duty Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training. In the years that followed, Mauro compiled a distinguished record of military service (including many years as a Chief Warrant Officer) and civil service. He fulfilled a variety of assignments across New York State and earned numerous awards and honors. On his final assignment before retirement, he served as Assistant Adjutant for the Commander and Officer-in-Charge for the 107th Infantry Brigade at the Seventh Regiment Armory, Park Avenue, NY. Over the years, he earned a reputation as one who was diligent and hardworking. Many looked up to and relied on him as a valued mentor. Most of his peers and close associates would affectionately refer to him as ""Chief"". He proudly served his country for 40 years and retired in April, 1995. In 1999, Mauro and his wife relocated to Venice, FL. For several years he served as an active volunteer for the B.P.O Elks Lodge #2378 in Englewood, FL. In 2003-04, he was recognized for his dedication by being voted Elk of the Year. Mauro's kind-hearted nature and sense of humor always had a pleasing effect on others. For most of his life he stayed active physically; for many years jogging and walking were a normal part of his daily routine. He also liked keeping up with current events. He occasionally enjoyed a leisurely game of golf, and especially enjoyed the camaraderie and the sharing of a meal that followed. Mauro will be dearly missed and is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Bonnie; two daughters: Barbara Sardanopoli (Mark) Heber, of Tompkins Cove, NY; and Theresa Sardanopoli Carbone of Reno, NV; one son Vito (Neeta) of New City, NY; four brothers: Anthony and Robert of Emerson, NJ; Armando of Grosse Ile, MI; and Renaldo of Myrtle Beach, SC; four grandchildren: Paul Anthony, Benita, Joshua and Emery; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Sunday, April 22 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Farley Funeral Home, Venice. A Mass will be held on Monday, April 23 at Our Lady of the Lourdes, Venice at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Sarasota National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Englewood Elks Lodge #2378.
