Robert Mitry "Bob" Obeid

Robert Mitry Obeid of Bradenton, Florida died on 03/09/17 at the age of 90. He was born the son of Abraham and Jennie (Solomon) Obeid in Wilkes-Barre, PA, where he graduated from Meyers High School. In 1944 he entered the Navy, serving in the Pacific during the end of WW2. In 1950 he graduated with honors from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA with a BS in chemistry, where he also played football. In 1951 he married Dorothy Saba, also of Wilkes-Barre, then was immediately called to Oklahoma by the Army. After returning to live in Wilkes-Barre, the first four of their six children were born. Bob, wife and children then moved to Gainesville in 1958, where he attended the Univ. of Florida School of Pharmacy, from which he graduated with honors. In 1961 the family moved to Sarasota, where their two youngest children were born. Bob first worked as a pharmacist at Sarasota Memorial and Liggett Drugs, then in 1966 opened K n K Pharmacy in Bradenton. In 1982 he opened Palm Plaza Pharmacy in Sarasota. He worked hard and long hours all his life, until his retirement. He loved watching most sports, especially Penn State football, and he liked to read, particularly about American history and the Civil War. He also liked to talk/argue politics, follow the stock market, travel with his wife and family, including trips out West, and he enjoyed the many trips back to his hometown in summers, during which he would go with his brothers and uncle to pick corn and tomatoes, visit family and old friends, and eat at the family’s hot dog restaurant, which he did until his poor health and Alzheimer’s precluded these trips any longer. He was a member of St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre. He was preceded in death by his father Abraham in 1973, his mother Jennie in 1984, his daughter Sharon in 2014, and his brother James in 2016. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his children Robert J. Obeid, M.D. (Carol) of NC; Renee Knadle (Wes) of Sarasota; Rick Obeid of Venice; Pam Obeid of Sarasota; Michael Obeid of Sarasota; as well as son-in-law Robert Willman, 10 grandsons and four granddaughters: Kris, Kelly, David, Ian, Lauren, Daniel, Gabriel, Jeremy, Michael, Joel, Matthew, Jonathan, Alyssa and Astrid; five great-grandchildren: Sean, Katie, Blake, Porter and Cora, and two on the way. He is also survived by siblings Joseph, Marion, William (Leona) and Charles (Cassie) Obeid, all of Pennsylvania, and sister-in-law Lola of Tucson. He was loved and will be missed by his family, who are grateful his mind and body are finally at peace. Burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery Wednesday March 15, 2017, with committal service at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations, if desired, may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, ANERA, Doctors Without Borders, Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota, or a charity of your choice.
