Shirley Jean Murphy

Shirley Jean Murphy died at her home in Venice Florida on November 22, 2016. Shirley was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 27, 1935. She was the daughter of Carl Fredrick Shannon and Francis May Devereaux. After graduating From Ohio State University in 1957 with a bachelor of science in education she married William Walter Merchant in August 24, 1957. She was preceded in death by William who passed in September 25, 1966. She is survived by her children with William, who are Chris Merchant of Florida, Mark and Kevin Merchant of Ohio. She is survived by her husband, G. Edward Murphy whom she married on October 7, 1978, in addition to many nieces and nephews in the Murphy family. Her career spanned 27 years teaching third grade in Marion, Ohio and Charlotte County Florida during which time she also earned her Masters of teaching degree. Her love of world travel, arts and crafts were well known to her friends and family. The family wishes to express appreciation to all the staff who gave such wonderful care in her final years. In her honor, a mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 7th at 10:30 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Venice Fl. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements.
