Virginia Sleezer McCollum, age 93, of Venice, FL passed away on June 8, 2013. She was born in Yorkville, IL on March 12, 1920 and came to Venice from Monroe, MI in 1975. She was a graduate of Illinois State Normal University, Class of 1942, and earned her Masters of Education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Virginia taught in the Monroe Public School System and retired in 1974. She was Past President of the American Association of University Women and the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was also a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe where she was chosen “Lay Person of the Year” in 1968.
After moving to Venice, she was a member of the Venice Bible Church and Grace Community Bible Church. Virginia enjoyed teaching Kay Arthur Bible Study Classes and she was active as a volunteer at Venice Christian School. She also was a member of the American Rose Society and the Southwest Florida Rose Society.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Charles E. “Tract” McCollum. Surviving family members include her sons Ronald W. (Laura) of Grand Rapids, MI, Stephen F. (Christine) of Monroe, MI, and John C. (Beth) of Venice; daughter Patricia A. Walchle (Randy) of Venice; 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel, on Monday, June 10th from 12:30 ââ"" 1:30 pm with a funeral service to follow. Burial will be at Venice Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to Grace Community Bible Church in Venice or Tidewell Hospice. Visitation Information
