Walter T. Lynch

View Video Tribute Walter Thomas Lynch was born in Philadelphia 5/2/1922, the son of Walter Thomas Lynch Sr. and Lucille Montgomery Lynch. Walter joined the army in 1940 as soon as he was old enough. In February, 1943 he was involved in the Battle of the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia with the Army First Division. He was permanently disabled in that battle due to mortar fire that erupted during his march through the pass. A baker in his teen years, he decided to build a bakery while recuperating in North Africa. With a few bags of cement and two empty oil drums he built a Dutch oven. Fuel was provided by scrap lumber. After the immediate success of the field bakery, its design was copied and distributed through the Mediterranean Base Sector. It could serve 1,000 troops every five hours. Orders were filled for the American Red Cross as well. For those and other actions he received many awards. His plans are featured at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee, VA. He met his wife M. Irene Cote during a furlough to Fort Devens,MA, he filled in for a friend who couldn’t make a date. They married in White Sulpher Springs, MD. and settled in Irene’s home town of Tewksbury, MA. He worked for General Electric until an injury forced an early retirement in 1969. They retired to N. Waterboro, ME and Venice, FL in 1986. He is survived by his wife M. Irene, children Dr. Kevin (Anne) of Venice, Karen Lynch of Lowell, MA, Patrick (Sheila) Lynch of Chelmsford, MA and Eileen Hutcheson of Londerry, NH. He is also survived by his brother John of Landsdowne, PA, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
