McKenzie Joyce Cortez Calderon

McKenzie Joyce Cortez Calderon (Sutterfield), age 29, passed away unexpectedly on May 28, 2026, at her home in Homedale, Idaho.

McKenzie was born on May 6, 1997, to Troy and Mindy. She was raised to be strong, independent, and hardworking, with qualities she carried with her throughout her life. McKenzie faced every challenge with determination, resilience, and grace. She was known for her caring heart, unwavering work ethic, and deep love for her family and friends. Kenzie enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting with her family, creating memories she treasured throughout her life. Above all else, she cherished being a mother to her son, Cruz, who was the center of her world. Her love for him was endless, and her greatest joy was watching him grow.

Kenzie attended school in Homedale before transferring to COSSA, where she graduated in 2015. She built a life rooted in dedication, compassion, and service to others.

McKenzie’s ambition, dedication, and natural leadership were evident throughout her professional career. She began her journey in healthcare as a caregiver at Autumn Wind, where she developed a deep passion for caring for others. She later became a Medication Technician at Ashley Manor, where her strong work ethic, compassion, and leadership skills led her into management. In 2023, McKenzie joined The Cottages as an Assistant at the Boise location. Through her determination, professionalism, and ability to inspire those around her, she quickly advanced to Executive Director and later Regional Director. She took great pride in her work and was deeply respected by her colleagues, staff, and the many residents whose lives she touched.

Throughout her career with The Cottages, McKenzie consistently set high standards for herself and those around her. In 2025, she achieved one of her greatest professional milestones by leading the Weiser Memory Care community to 100% occupancy and the Assisted Living community to 90% occupancy. That same year, she was honored with the prestigious Cottages Success Award, a reflection of her dedication, leadership, and passion for serving others.

Kenzie cared deeply for both her residents and her team. She held her caregivers to the highest standards while leading with compassion and by example. Her team often spoke of her willingness to step in and help with resident care, regardless of what else demanded her attention. She treated residents like family and inspired those around her through her servant leadership, kindness, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

McKenzie was preceded in death by her boyfriend, Ramon Almanza; her grandmothers, Brenda Rae Prow Sutterfield Watts and Joyce Martin; her grandfather, Earl Sutterfield; and her great-grandparents.

She is survived by her beloved son, Cruz Cortez; her father, Troy Sutterfield (Stacey Stimmel); and her mother, Mindy (Tony) Salgado. She is also survived by her siblings, Nick (Kelsey) Sutterfield, McKaylynn Salgado, Dixie Stimmel, and Kolten Kelly.

She is further survived by her uncle, Walt Sutterfield; her aunts, Tondra (Don) Robinson, Tami McJunkin, and Shannon (Tyler) Allcott; her cherished nieces, Kaisley Sutterfield, Malayah Albor, Analiyah Albor, and Elaine Whiteley; her nephews, Kyson Sutterfield and Ezra Albor; and her cousins, Sofia Sutterfield and Alli McJunkin. She is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends who will forever treasure her memory.

Kenzie loved spending time with her family, and nothing brought her greater joy than being with her son, Cruz, and her nieces and nephews. They were truly her world. She delighted in spoiling them with love, kindness, and attention, creating special memories that they will carry with them forever. Kenzie had a remarkable gift for connecting with children and a heart that overflowed with compassion. Her warmth, generosity, and nurturing spirit made every child feel loved, valued, and safe in her presence.

McKenzie’s kindness, strength, determination, and love will never be forgotten. She touched countless lives through her work, friendships, and devotion to her family. Though her time with us was far too short, the impact she made on those who knew and loved her will remain forever.

Graveside services for McKenzie Joyce Cortez Calderon (Sutterfield) will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Marsing–Homedale Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Txoko Ona Basque Center.

McKenzie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
